Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865), the sixteenth president, embodies the possibilities of young America. Born in 1809 to uneducated parents in a one-room farmhouse, Lincoln rose from his humble origins to capture the top office in the land. A speaker of unmatched rhetorical power, he stood firm in his opposition to the expansion of slavery and eventually helped secure victory over the secessionist confederate movement. When he was assassinated in 1865 he became a martyr to national unity. His hand written letters and notes contain an emotional power and immediacy impossible to locate in text produced electronically.
