![]() We love organic cotton. Did you know that it produces some of the strongest yarns available while being luxurious against your skin and naturally good for the planet? It takes about 1/3 of a pound of chemicals to grow enough cotton for one T-shirt, according to The Sustainable Cotton Project. Moreover, many of these chemicals don't end up on the cotton, but in the soil, the water, and the air. Cotton is one of the most pesticide-intensive crops in the world: Conventional growing methods use about 23% of the world’s insecticides on less than 3% of the cropland. The USDA reports that more than 53 million pounds of pesticides were used in cotton production in 1996. Organic cotton is grown without the use of pesticides and chemical fertilizers on land that has been certified to be free of those compounds for at least three years. Since organic cotton doesn't have chemical finishes and requires minimal processing, many people feel that it's even softer than conventionally grown cotton.
