Since climbing clothes per se didn’t exist in the 1960’s, he tried all kinds of clothing that had the durability, range of motion, and visibility to make his climbs more efficient. Soon, fellow climbers began asking where he got them... and the rest is history. Patagonia is all about exploring the outdoors and creates clothes to support this, functioning for elite athletes as well as weekend warriors.
Their clothes are made from sustainable, environmentally–friendly fabrics whenever possible, like organic cotton and recycled polyester, and they’re made to last a long time. In fact, pretty much anybody you know probably has a Patagonia piece that they’ve had for years and years. But in addition to this, Patagonia has made inroads on every front to create a company that works to further environmental causes, from their products, to their culture, to their buildings, to their philanthropy. They’re pioneers in the true sense of the word… in fact the latest is that they’ve built a solar carport that shades cars during the day while producing energy equivalent to that used in about 60 California homes during peak usage periods. What more can we say?
